haxies: Mess with the O.S, die like the rest

Filed under Apple, Software on October 28th, 2007

It seems that some people using APE (Application “Enhancer”) from Unsanity got burned while installing Leopard, and where greeted by the new O.S with “blue screens”, crashes, stalling and general unhappiness (unsanity?). Why am I not surprised?

Here’s my immortal words of wisdom about installing third party hacks on OS X: don’t.

All of those damn things (kernel extensions (.kexts), haxies, input manager hacks, etc) have the potential to destabilize your system in various ugly ways. Some things are better left the way God Jobs designed them. Haven’t you seen freakin’ Frankenstein? Do you want a parade of bugs, instabilities, incompatibilities and voided warranties arriving at your doorsteps holding torches, large forks and spades?

It’s not like most of those “extensions” deliver anything of extraordinary value, either. Is a cool new Shapeshifter theme or a marginally useful tweak on an application worth eventually pulling your hair over?
